PROVIDING PROCESS SAFETY SOLUTIONS

Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)

Did you know that certain safety tests must, by regulation, be performed by laboratories that are GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) compliant?

Tests which must be performed by a GLP compliant laboratory include those that collect data,
  • for Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • to determine material hazard Classification, Packaging and Labelling requirements.
  • to meet transport of Dangerous Goods
  • for example according to UN Transport recommendations.
  • for the notification of new substances (NONS).
No standard other than GLP is acceptable to the MCA, HSE or DTI .

Today GLP is no longer just a 'goal' to which professional laboratories should try to aspire, it is a fundamental requirement. The methodology of GLP is now enshrined in UK law as a 'Statutory Instrument' and overseen by the Government agency (MCA), responsible for auditing all participating organisations.

The principles of 'Good Laboratory Practice' (GLP) are based on a simple philosophy: laboratories should design, perform and report 'safety studies' on chemicals, preparations and powders 'carefully' and should document all activities ensuring that data integrity is maintained so that the studies can be reconstructed at any time afterwards.

As a GLP registered laboratory, Chilworth have to comply with procedures laid down by the MCA. This includes having permanent trained staff run tests to a documented Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), ensuring regular equipment calibration is performed and recorded thus guaranteeing traceability of results. These activities must be assessed by separate QA staff and the data scrutinised by senior technical staff before being held in a secure archive.

At Chilworth all the work we undertake is performed to the highest possible standards since most of it is ultimately used for the protection of human life and property. For this reason, all our safety test work is performed in laboratories that are GLP accredited, making Chilworth one of the very few GLP compliant process safety laboratories operating anywhere in Europe. Furthermore, all our laboratories are supported by our consultancy team of experienced Process Safety Specialists and Engineers available to offer full data interpretation services and ensure correct implementation on your site.
